Change Your Mindset for a Healthier Lifestyle

Typically when people mention getting more healthy, they are only talking about making changes to their diet and exercising more. We tend to think that eating healthy and losing weight are the keys to a healthy life. And, while these are great changes to make, if we don’t first change the way we think, we may have a hard time making those changes.

We see this happen at the beginning of every year. According to a poll done by YouGov, two of the most common New Year’s resolutions for 2018 were eat healthier and get more exercise. But after a few weeks, these resolutions are usually forgotten. In fact, some research has shown that 80% of the people who sign up for gym memberships due to a New Year’s resolution stop coming by the second week in February. The research also reports that the rate of new member sign-ups at gyms slow down in February.

So, why is it so difficult to keep the commitment to change our lifestyle? Why do we tend to return to our old habits of eating whatever we want, whenever we want, and not even attempting to exercise?

Some experts believe that how we think and how we approach situations in our lives can determine whether we’ll be successful in establishing healthier lifestyle habits. One study found that our mindset can have a big impact on our health and our wellbeing.

How do we start to change our mindsets?

Some people have found that journaling your food and feelings may be helpful, while others say that setting goals, getting a partner and using positive and negative reinforcements are great tools.

But there is no right or wrong answer here. How you start to change your thinking depends on you. What worked for me or someone else you know, may not work for you. There’s no research to say that one way is better than another.

Healthy living is a choice, and it’s one that is based on your lifestyle, your preferences and your goals. No one can make those changes except you.
