How to Make and Keep New Year's Resolutions

“This is my year. I am getting in the best shape of my life. I am eating only foods that are good for me, and drinking nothing but water. Bring it on 2015… 2016…2017….”

We’ve all been there. We made New Years resolutions and kept some while others slipped away as quickly as the New Year excitement. A new year is a great time to set goals, refocus, and start over. With 2017 coming to a close, it’s time to start thinking of resolutions.

Here are some tips to help you make and keep your New Years goals.

  1. Be reasonable. Make your resolutions something that you can truly do for the long term. As with any fitness goal, it’s a lifestyle change.

While saying, “I’m going to completely cut out sugar” is a great health goal, it’s not reasonable if you are someone who eats desert every day. Start with, “I’m only going to eat desert twice a week.” Then slowly work your way to cutting it out completely. This will lower your chances of breaking the resolution and giving up all together.
  2. Write it down. Write your 2018 goals on a piece of paper, and put it somewhere you will see it every day. If you really want to commit, then make a vision board. Write your goals on a board, along with pictures of the results you want. Set it in your room, office, wherever you will look at it multiple times a day. Seeing it every day will remind you why you wanted to make the goal in the first place.
  3. Tell others. Telling others will help keep you accountable. If others know your goal, then you will be less likely to quit. It’s easier to quit when you’re the only one that knows your goal. If you tell others what you want to achieve, they will be there to support you when it gets hard.
  4. Use a planner. Sit down once a week, and plan out your workouts and meals for the following week. This will help you stay on track. There’s also something so satisfying about marking each day off. If you go a day without eating sugar, then write it in your planner. After a few weeks you’ll look back on how far you’ve come and only want to continue.
