How to Have a Healthier Backyard Barbecue

Summer is here and the weather is HOT, which means it's the perfect time to get your friends together for pool parties and grilling out! If you're looking for food to serve at your next barbecue that will help you stay on your nutrition plan without sacrificing taste, we've got you covered! Check out these recipe ideas for a healthier backyard barbecue.

1. Take a skinny dip

Dips, like nacho cheese or French onion, can pack tons of unwanted fat and calories. Try one of these healthy dip recipes from My Life Well Loved, and if you really want to rack up the health benefits, swap your chips for raw veggies.

TRY: Garlicky guacamole, Healthy bean dip, or Avocado cucumber dip.

2. Swap your buns

We're not hating on burger buns, but if you're trying the Paleo or Whole 30 plan (or just want to switch things up!), try using large portobello mushroom caps or sweet potato slices.

3. Get grillin'

Use that grill to char up your favorite veggies! We especially love grilled peppers, onions, and squash. Did you know that fruit is also great grilled? Try peaches or pineapples for a sweet and smoky dessert option.

4. Choose lean meats

Hot dogs and burgers are great, but fish or chicken will save you calories and taste great when grilled. Get some inspiration from these 50 grilled chicken recipes or these 10 grilled fish recipes.

5. Watch your booze

We probably don't have to tell you this, but alcohol = dehydration and lots of unwanted calories. We're not telling you to miss out on all of the fun, but try using sparkling water, herbs, or a squeeze of citrus as mixers instead of sodas and sugary juices. Also, don't forget to drink lots of water in between cocktails!
