Take Your Workout Outside

Here in the South we have enjoyed some amazing weather the past few days. Nothing cures the winter blues like a week of 75 degrees. I can already smell the fresh cut grass, and the barbecue cooking on the grill. Okay.. so it’s still February, but we can dream right?? Try and take your workout outdoors this week to enjoy this weather!!

A study done by the Scottish Healthy Survey observed 2,000 active participants and found those who took their workout outdoors had a 50 percent greater positive effect on mental health than going to the gym. 50 percent!!

Another study by Glasgow University found that doing some type of cardio outdoors dramatically reduces stress.

A third study, reported by BBC, found that by spending just 5 minutes of exercise outdoors can improve your mood and self esteem.

Do you get the point!?! Let’s get outside!! Even if it’s just for a few minutes, you’ll notice a difference!

Of course you won’t have a gym outdoors. You’ll need to be creative and find ways to make it work!

Here are some ideas, just adjust them to fit your needs:

  1. Push yourself at the Park- Go to the nearby park and use the bench for a full body workout. It can be used for box jumps, push-ups, tricep dips, step ups, reverse lunges, planks, mountain climbers, the options are endless!
  2. Step it up at the Stadium- this can be your local sports complex, or high school football field. Use the stadium bleachers and get to it. Run up and down the stairs as many times as you can. You’ll be sweating in no time. To turn this one into a high intensity interval training workout (HIIT), run all the way up as fast as you can and rest as you walk down. Repeat it for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Take it to the Trails- do your normal treadmill workout, actually on a trail. It’s a lot harder than running on a constant flat surface! You may even run harder and further because you’ll be distracted by all the scenery, right? I’m not kidding though, going from a treadmill to a trail is amazing. You’ll work more muscles since the running surface is always changing.

Right now is the perfect time to be exercising outdoors. Find a way that you can work up a sweat outside this week and enjoy it!!
